How common: Knee injuries dominate skiing and wrist injuries dominate snowboarding; both fall disproportionately on people who arrive unprepared
What it is
Skiing and snowboarding demand something very few people train for: hours of sustained eccentric quadriceps work holding a partly bent knee against gravity, combined with continuous balance corrections on an unstable surface, repeated for six days in a row.
The injury pattern reflects that directly. Injuries cluster in the afternoon and in the later days of a trip, when the legs have fatigued and control has deteriorated. Preseason conditioning is one of the few things that reliably shifts that, and most people do none.
What causes it
Most people have more than one of these at once, and they feed each other. Read the
list looking for the two or three that sound like your week rather than for the one
true answer — the ones that describe you are the ones worth acting on.
- Untrained eccentric quadriceps endurance
- Holding a partly bent knee through a run is sustained eccentric and isometric quadriceps work. Almost nothing in ordinary life or ordinary gym training builds the endurance required for hours of it.
- Fatigue late in the day
- Injuries cluster in the afternoon and toward the end of a trip. Fatigued muscles produce worse control, slower correction and higher forces reaching the joints.
- Doing nothing since last winter
- A week of intense skiing on legs that have not been trained for a year is the standard pattern, and it is the underlying reason for most of what follows.
- Unfamiliar balance demands
- Balancing on a sliding surface with long levers on the feet is a specific skill. Balance and proprioceptive training transfers to it and is rarely done.
- Weak hips and poor knee control
- Knee injuries in skiing typically involve the knee collapsing inward under load. Hip abductor and external rotator strength is what prevents that, exactly as in other sports.
- Six consecutive days
- The volume of a ski week is far higher than anything most people do at home, with no recovery days. Cumulative fatigue builds across the trip.
- Altitude, cold and alcohol
- All three affect recovery, judgement and coordination. Altitude alone reduces exercise capacity, and the combination with an evening's drinking is a recognised contributor.
- Equipment and bindings
- Bindings that do not release appropriately are a genuine and modifiable factor in knee injuries. Correctly set and serviced equipment matters.
- Skiing beyond ability on difficult terrain
- Injuries are more common when terrain exceeds ability, particularly when fatigue has already reduced control.

What the evidence says: Eccentric quad and hip strength plus balance is the specific preparation, and pre-season conditioning demonstrably reduces winter sport injury rates. Seasonal, so it needs to be prompted at the right time of year to be used.

Any previous knee ligament injury deserves specific preparation and possibly a brace - get advice before the trip
And whatever the body part: chest pain or unusual breathlessness on
exertion; a fever alongside the pain; unexplained weight loss; pain that is constant and
unrelated to how you move; new numbness, weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control; or
one calf that is swollen, warm and painful. Any of those, stop and get assessed.
How it usually goes
Six to eight weeks of preseason conditioning makes a large difference to how much of the week is enjoyable rather than survived, and it reduces the fatigue-driven injuries that dominate the statistics. Quadriceps endurance and single-leg balance are the two qualities that transfer most. The simplest injury-avoidance rule available needs no training at all: stop when the legs have gone rather than taking one more run.
